In the National Park Worlds in Mittersill, nature really is close enough to touch. Austria's highest peak, the Großglockner with its almost 3,800 metres, is located in one of Europe's most impressive national parks, together with another 342 glaciers. At the National Park Centre in Mittersill, you can find out all there is to know about the national park and its flora and fauna.

Großglockner Hochalpenstraße

With a distance of 48km, 36 curves and an elevation of up to 2,504 metres, the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße in the Province of Salzburg leads directly up Austria's highest mountain, the Großglockner. The Hochalpenstraße is among Europe's most stunning passes and crosses the Hohe Tauern National Park on the way up to the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Höhe. Wildpark Ferleiten/Freizeitpark Ferleiten

A walk through this wildlife park that is home to more than 200 species of Alpine animals and measures approx. 15 hectares will take around an hour and a half and is stroller- and wheelchair-friendly. The park is located just before the tolling station, alongside the Großglocknerstraße.

The Freizeitpark Ferleiten is located right next door. This adventure park is all about fun and games on an area of 2,000m². Entry to the adventure park is free.

Kaprun reservoir

The majestic, almost vertical dam in the high mountains is 107 metres high and among the most impressive man-made buildings in the Province of Salzburg. A shuttle bus takes visitors to the reservoirs of Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden. If you're interested in the technology behind it all, take a tour of the inside of the structure and let expert guides tell you more about the fascinating history and details of the dam. The air in the high Alps will definitely make you hungry - now might be a good time for a stop at the Bergrestaurant, where you can enjoy the splendid panorama as well as regional specialties on the sun terrace.

The Krimml waterfalls are the fifth-highest in the world, with a drop height of 380 metres. But not just the waterfalls are a mind-boggling natural spectacle: the inner-alpine forests around the waterfalls, predominantly spruce and fir, are home to no fewer than 327 mosses, all of which thrive in the spray of the Krimml waterfalls. The Krimmler Achental high valley has been a nature preserve since 1958. In 1961, the Krimml waterfalls were designate a natural monument by the Provincial government of Salzburg.

Eisriesenwelt Werfen

The "World of the Ice Giants" in Werfen consists of a cave labyrinth that spans more than 40km in total. These caves developed during the formation of the Alps, 100 million years ago, and have been shaped and enlarged by chemical processes and water erosion ever since. The Eisriesenwelt is a dynamic ice cave. Depending on the outside temperature, the temperature in the cave can also vary. Various openings in the caves let in meltwater in the spring, which freezes into fascinating shapes in those parts of the cave that are below zero. The caves are only open to visitors in the summer, from early May until late October.

Freilichtmuseum Salzburg

The Salzburg open-air museum houses one hundred original buildings from the history of the province, all painstakingly reconstructed. This fascinating journey through time comprises farm buildings and workshops as well as structures pertaining to rural trade and industry. For train buffs, the open-air museum has a very special treat in store: The museum railway runs through the area of the museum over a distance of 1.7km. 69 passengers may board this unique heritage train at the "Flachgau" station right at the entrance to the museum and keep going all the way to "Pongau", the final stop.

Hellbrunn Castle and water gardens

Hellbrunn is a fixture in every guide book. The beautiful palace was built in the 17th century under the rule of Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus, modelled on late Gothic style by architect Santino Solari. The water gardens of the Hellbrunn summer palace are famous all over the world and continue to delight visitors to this day. Be prepared for a wet surprise or two when taking a tour of the garden, complete with historic anecdotes! This day trip is particular recommended on a clear, warm summer's day.

Hohensalzburg Castle

Hohensalzburg Castle towers on the Festungsberg, one of the three mountains of the city of Salzburg. The castle is definitely the landmark of Salzburg, and, with a building area of 7,000 m2, it is also one of the largest castles in Europe. Built in the 11th century, the castle has been almost fully preserved and is one of Austria's most-visited attractions outside Vienna.

House of Mozart's birth and the Mozart residence

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on 27 January 1756 in the Hagenauer Haus at Getreidegasse 9 in Salzburg. Today, the house is one of the most visited museums in the world. Mozart spent his childhood and youth here with his parents Leopold and Anna Maria and sister "Nannerl".

In addition to original documents, letters and memorabilia, you can admire the collection of most of Mozart's portraits taken during his lifetime. A highlight are the historical instruments on display, such as Mozart's children's violin and clavichord.

Mirabell Palace and gardens

Particularly impressive elements in Mirabell Palace, located right at the heart of the city of Salzburg, are the sweeping and richly decorated marble staircase that leads into the palace and the marble hall. The marble hall of Mirabell Palace is among the world's most popular and picturesque places to get married.

The Mirabell gardens were first opened to the public in 1854. The gardens with their magnificent flowers, the Pegasus fountain outside the palace, the dwarf garden and the hedge theatre are popular photo spots for tourists and locals alike.
